What is Active Care?

Active care, or rehabilitation, is when you – the patient – is actively doing something. You are walking, lifting weights, or involved in a specific movement or flow. The doctor may physically have their hands on you but you are still putting some work in. Active care may be limited when you are in extreme amounts of pain such as right after a car accident when “everything” hurts.  Our goal is to get you to active care as soon as possible. Why? Because it has been proven time after time that it is more effective in getting you to where you want to be faster than ONLY providing passive treatments.

Active care is a general term that includes elements of strength training, belly breathing/bracing, mobility work, yoga, pilates and other forms of exercises to address the patient’s specific needs. At Elevate Sport and Spine, we believe that active care is the most important avenue for permanent pain reduction and long-lasting musculoskeletal and nervous system health.

When you are injured or in pain, chiropractic adjustments and soft tissue work can help relax muscles and joints; but active care is what truly heals the area and strengthens it against further injury.

Passive Care

Increase Range of Motion

Oxygenate Tissues

Block Pain Signals

Decrease Tension

Passive treatments are interventions or treatments that are done to the patient.  Adjustments, massage therapy, electric stimulation and acupuncture all fall under this category. You lay down and the practitioner “fixes” you.  Passive therapy aims to reduce the patients pain levels or to at least make them more manageable.  This is typically seen more in the acute stages of treatment.  At Elevate Sport and Spine it is important to us to not have our patients become reliant on passive therapies.  Creating a sense of dependence takes the power away from the patient and places it on the practitioner.  Active care gives that power back to the patient.  We also do our best to add in elements of active therapy while performing the passive therapies.

Chiropractic Adjustments (Manual, Drop, Blocks, Activator)

A procedure in which a chiropractic physician manipulates joints of the body, to improve joint and muscle function. A chiropractic adjustment can quickly and temporarily relieve pain, increase a joint’s range of motion, and decrease muscle tension.

Manual Therapy (Myofascial Release, ART, Graston, Cupping)

Manual therapy is a specialized form of conservative therapy delivered with the hands as opposed to a device or machine.  The practitioner may use tools to help them perform the therapy such as in cupping or Graston techniques.  Manual physical therapy involves restoring mobility to stiff joints and reducing muscle tension in order to return the patient to more natural movement without pain.

Massage Therapy (Swedish, Sports, Deep Tissue)

Get dedicated hands on sessions individualized to your body’s needs. Our massage specialist utilizes a variety of techniques to keep you feeling your absolute best. Sometimes an active life requires a little extra TLC. Massage therapy helps reduce muscle tension and increase circulation to improve recovery of soft tissue injuries.

Passive Modalities (Electric Stimulation, Heat, Cold, Blood Flow Restriction)

Passive modalities aim to reduce a patient’s pain levels as well as make them more manageable. Most of these methods are used to improve blood flow and restore circulation to the affected area, thereby reducing pain and inflammation.

Flexion-Distraction (a Form of Traction)

Flexion-distraction therapy is performed on a segmented table that moves as your practitioner slowly manipulates your spine. The manipulations, combined with the movements of the table, stretch and decompress your spine, relieving your back, leg, neck, or arm pain.

Motor Vehicle Accident

Our specialized care services are designed to guide patients on their journey to recovery after a motor vehicle accident. At our practice, we understand the challenges that arise from such incidents and are committed to helping individuals get back to doing what they love. We employ a comprehensive approach that combines both active and passive therapies to address a spectrum of injuries, particularly focusing on effective whiplash treatment. By tailoring our methods to each patient’s unique needs, we aim not only to alleviate immediate discomfort but also to promote long-term healing and functionality. Our goal is to empower individuals to reclaim their lives and pursuits with confidence, utilizing a thoughtful blend of therapies to support their complete well-being.
